is one of the most recognized of all Cuban artists internationally. Born in Guantánamo and a descendent of Spaniards who emigrated after the Civil War, she studied painting, sculpture and engraving in the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Art, from where she graduated in 1983.
Her work has been exhibited worldwide, among many: the Stadthaus in Zurich and the Musee des Beaux Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland; the “Carrillo Gil” Museum of Art in Mexico City; the Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo; the Royal College of Art in London, United Kingdom; El Museo del Barrio in New York; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Her work is included in the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Lehigh University Art Galleries in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Alfredo Zalce in Morelia; the Ninart Gallery in Mexico City; and the Bacardi Collection in Miami, among other important private and public collections.
Ceballos is also a well known feminist activist and has taken part in demonstrations supporting the San Isidro and 27N Movements in Cuba. She has been a promoter of culture – she was co-founder of Espacio Aglutinador created in her own home-studio and was the first independent and alternative artistic space in Cuba, after the revolutionary triumph.
